After a decade of high-profile external CEO hires, a growing number of boards are reversing course.
For much of the past decade, boards facing a CEO transition gravitated toward external hires — often high-profile executives from adjacent industries, brought in explicitly to disrupt established ways of working.
That pattern is reversing. A new wave of succession decisions favors long-tenured internal candidates, with boards citing faster ramp-up times and lower cultural disruption as decisive factors.
The shift also reflects a broader recalibration of what boards actually want from leadership transitions: less disruption, more continuity, and — crucially — less risk during a period when many industries face enough external volatility already.
